Olympia · c. 1961–1964
Typical used$260–$450
The Olympia SM7 is essentially an SM4 in a modernised, more angular body. Inside it has the same keyset tabulator and the same Wilhelmshaven segment-shift mechanism; the Typewriter Database records SM7s from about 1961 to 1964, after which the SM8 and SM9 took over. Some markets got white, pink and blue bodies, and the typeface range is wide, from standard pica and elite to Congress Elite and script faces that ask a premium. Because collectors chase the SM3/SM4 for their looks and the SM9 for its availability, the SM7 tends to sell for a little less with the same build, which makes it the value pick of the series. In late 2026 about 26 were on eBay, mostly $260–450 delivered, and a specialist-serviced SM7 was about $585.
Buying guide
From Oct 1, 2026 listings
26 SM7s are listed, most at $260–450 delivered. The SM7 sells for less than the SM4 with the same Wilhelmshaven build, which makes it a value pick in the series. A specialist-serviced SM7 is about $585, and the same seller asks $825 for a blue one. Typeface matters: Congress Elite and script faces ask more, and several listings have Cyrillic or Ukrainian keyboards. Red flag: two sellers list the same serial number, 2256351, under one title. Budget buyers start at the $170 cased one with free shipping; the $585 serviced machine suits someone who wants to type immediately.

Described as excellent condition, with its case, about $222 delivered with Best Offer from a 100% seller, below the band. Ask whether that means it types cleanly or just looks good, and request a typed sample.
Olympia SM7 Deluxe Typewriter 1960s German‑Made w/ Case – Excellent Co

Serviced by brooksawantiques, a 100% typewriter seller, with the Pica No. 97 typeface, about $585 delivered. You pay roughly $300 over an untested machine for the service; ask what it covered and how it will be packed.
Nice! Serviced 1963 Olympia SM7 Vintage Portable Typewriter Pica No.97

The clean and adjustment are already done, so it should type the day it arrives rather than needing a $100 service for hardened segment lubricant. It's also $240 less than the same seller's blue serviced SM7.
Nice! Serviced 1963 Olympia SM7 Vintage Portable Typewriter Pica No.97

Congress Elite typeface at 11 characters per inch, $500 with free shipping and Best Offer from a 100% seller, a bit over the band. Congress faces are what SM7 collectors look for; ask for a typed sample to confirm the face.

Prices and availability change daily. The full, current search on eBay shows every matching listing, including new ones since Oct 1, 2026.
See all current listings on eBay →Manual typewriters here are 50–80 years old; the same condition badge means different things at that age than on a 2-year-old electronic. Use this as a translation key when you read listings.
New / new-old-stock
Vanishingly rare on a manual typewriter — most surviving units are 50+ years old. A "new" listing here usually means a late-production unit (e.g. a 1990s Olivetti Lettera 32 still sealed in factory packaging) or a seller misusing the badge. Verify the listing photos show the original packaging and factory ribbon spool; treat the price premium with skepticism unless those check out.
Refurbished / serviced
The body has been through a CLA (clean / lubricate / adjust) by a typewriter specialist — segment re-lubed, platen tested or re-covered, draw band re-tensioned, type slugs cleaned, key linkages freed. Expect a $100–250 premium over an unserviced "used" equivalent; the listing should name the shop (Gramercy, Cambridge, WordsAreWinged, etc.) or include a service receipt. Highest-confidence buy for a writer who wants to type the day it arrives.
Used — tested / working
The realistic ceiling for most listings. Body types, carriage returns, escapement advances, shift works, ribbon advances. Cosmetic wear is normal. Look for "tested with fresh ribbon" (best), "tested — types all letters" (fine), plus a stated return window — anything short of that drifts toward "for parts." Platen rubber often still hardened on a "used — tested" body; budget $150–250 for a re-cover if you plan to type long-form on it.
For parts / not working
Sold as-is with no functional guarantee. Common project-typewriter failure modes: hardened platen, gummed segment (sticky keys), broken draw band, missing case, broken bell, dirty type slugs. Buy only to harvest components for another body, donate to a tech for spares, or accept the gamble of a $100–300 specialist CLA on top. The cheapest path to a typing body is almost always a "used — tested" listing, not "for parts" plus a service bill.
The ribbon, brush, platen fluid, and oil a body off eBay almost never ships with. The ribbon link is matched to Group 1 universal — the wrong spool is the easiest way to lose a typewriter purchase on the consumable.

Search on AmazonSame checks as the SM4: a sticky segment from hardened lubricant (about $100 to clean), a hard platen, and a carriage that should travel smoothly under its own tension. Check the keyboard: several listings in our snapshot had Cyrillic or Ukrainian layouts. Check serial numbers too; we saw two listings from different sellers showing the same serial, a sign of copied photos.
The SM7 overlaps with the cheaper SM5 of the same years. Production years are approximate spans compiled from collector references (the Typewriter Database, oz.Typewriter, Ted Munk's and Richard Polt's typewriter pages). Individual machines are dated by serial number: look the serial up on the Typewriter Database's serial-number page for this brand rather than trusting a seller's stated year.
