Flat, light machines built for travel, many weighing under 10 pounds. The Hermes Baby of 1935 set the pattern; the Olivetti Lettera 22 and 32, Smith-Corona Skyriter and Corsair, Olympia Splendid 33, Adler Tippa and Remington Travel-Riter followed. They have full keyboards but compact carriages and lighter actions, which suits letters and journals more than long manuscripts. Check the ribbon spool before ordering ribbon: Letteras need Olivetti spools, the Skyriter and Corsair take small 1⅝-inch spools, and the Hermes Baby is happiest with its original metal spools. In late 2026 most ultra-portables asked about $100–330 delivered on eBay, with Hermes Babies and Valentines higher.
