Used Torpedo typewriters
Torpedo grew out of the Weil brothers' bicycle works in Frankfurt-Rödelheim, which moved into typewriters in 1907. Remington Rand took over Torpedo's typewriter business in 1931 but kept selling machines under the Torpedo name. The company's best-known portable is the Model 18 family (18, 18a, 18b), which collectors rate alongside the best German portables for its action and build. Remington moved typewriter production to the Netherlands around 1964, and the Rödelheim factory closed in 1966; late 18bs were also sold under Remington Rand and other badges. Torpedos are uncommon in the US, and most listings ship from Europe: in late 2026 Torpedo 18s asked about $400–650 delivered on eBay, with working machines from around $305. Brand-specific parts are harder to find than Olympia or Adler parts.
