Brother Industries of Nagoya, Japan, started out with sewing machines and entered the typewriter business in 1961. By the late 1960s it was building portables in large numbers for its own brand and for American retailers such as Sears and Montgomery Ward, which is why the same Brother machine turns up under several names. The Charger 11, sold from the 1970s into the 1980s and often in its Correction version with a lift-off correction key, is the model you will meet most. Brother portables are practical, inexpensive machines rather than collector pieces, and many repair shops decline to service them, so buy one that is described as typing. In late 2026 Charger 11s asked about $120–270 delivered on eBay.
